Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience. Whether you’ve spent one hour in the chair or completed a full-day session, your tattoo is not only a beautiful piece of art—it is also a controlled skin injury that now needs time to heal properly.
At NKINK Tattoo Studio in Bern, we believe that excellent tattooing doesn’t end when the session is over. The healing process is just as important as the tattoo itself. Proper aftercare allows your skin to recover, preserves fine details, and helps your tattoo remain beautiful for many years.
Many clients become worried during the first few weeks because their tattoo starts looking different every day. Fortunately, most of these changes are completely normal.
This guide explains exactly what happens during the first 4–6 weeks, how your skin heals, and when you should contact us.
Why Tattoo Healing Is So Important
Every tattoo creates thousands of microscopic punctures in the skin.
During your tattoo session, pigment is carefully placed into the dermis while the upper layer of skin (epidermis) experiences temporary trauma. Your body’s natural healing response immediately begins repairing the skin while safely locking the pigment underneath.
Healing cannot be rushed.
Even if the surface looks healed after two weeks, the deeper skin layers continue rebuilding for several more weeks.
This is why following the correct aftercare routine is essential.
Immediately After Your Tattoo (Day 0)
Your tattoo will usually look:
- very vibrant
- slightly swollen
- warm to the touch
- red around the tattoo
- occasionally have small amounts of blood or plasma
This is completely normal.
Longer tattoo sessions naturally create more skin irritation than smaller tattoos. Larger pieces may remain swollen for several days.
Before leaving NKINK Tattoo Studio, your tattoo will be professionally protected, and we will explain your individual aftercare routine.
Days 1–3: The Inflammatory Phase
During the first few days your immune system is working hard.
You may notice:
- redness
- warmth
- mild swelling
- tenderness
- clear plasma
- slight leakage under the protective film
This does not automatically mean your tattoo is infected.
Your body is simply beginning the healing process.
The most important things during these first days are:
- Leave the protective film on for the recommended time.
- Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
- Follow our aftercare instructions exactly.
- Avoid unnecessary touching.
- Wear clean, loose clothing.
Days 4–10: Peeling Begins
This is the stage where many people become nervous.
Your tattoo may suddenly become:
- dry
- flaky
- itchy
- dull
- cloudy
This is completely normal.
The outer skin begins replacing itself.
Many people think they are “losing the ink.”
You’re not.
Only the dead outer skin is shedding. The tattoo pigment remains safely below the surface.
Never pick, scratch, or peel the skin yourself.
Removing peeling skin too early can create unnecessary trauma, affect healing, and increase the risk of scarring.
Let your body do the work naturally.
Weeks 2–4: The “Cloudy” Stage
This stage surprises many first-time tattoo clients.
Your tattoo may appear:
- lighter
- slightly blurry
- greyish
- less vibrant
Again—don’t panic.
A very thin layer of newly healed skin is still covering the tattoo.
This temporary layer makes the tattoo appear less sharp than it actually is.
As your skin continues to mature, the colours and contrast gradually become clearer again.
Patience is essential.
Weeks 4–6: Final Skin Recovery
By now your skin usually feels normal again.
The tattoo is no longer peeling, and the surface looks smooth.
However, the deeper layers are still completing their repair.
Around this stage:
- details become sharper
- colours settle
- black areas appear richer
- contrast improves
- skin texture normalises
This is why we recommend waiting until your tattoo has fully healed before evaluating the final result.
Long Tattoo Sessions vs Small Tattoos
Every tattoo heals differently.
Several factors influence healing:
- tattoo size
- placement
- session length
- skin type
- immune system
- lifestyle
- sleep
- nutrition
- smoking
- sun exposure
A small fine line tattoo often settles faster than a full sleeve completed over many hours.
Large tattoos naturally require more recovery because more skin has been tattooed.
This is perfectly normal.
Itching Is Normal
One of the most common questions we receive is:
“My tattoo is incredibly itchy. Is something wrong?”
Usually, no.
Itching is simply part of your skin repairing itself.
Avoid scratching.
Instead:
- moisturise according to our aftercare instructions
- gently tap around the tattoo if needed
- wear loose clothing
- keep the skin clean
The itching will gradually disappear.
Protect Your Tattoo From the Sun
Fresh tattoos and UV radiation do not mix.
During the healing period:
- avoid direct sunlight
- avoid tanning
- avoid sunbeds
UV exposure can:
- slow healing
- increase irritation
- fade colours
- affect long-term tattoo quality
Even after your tattoo has healed, daily sunscreen significantly helps preserve its appearance.
Avoid Heavy Exercise and Swimming
Your skin needs time to recover.
During the first healing weeks we recommend avoiding:
- swimming pools
- lakes
- hot tubs
- saunas
- excessive sweating
- contact sports
Heavy exercise can increase irritation, friction, and sweating, which may interfere with proper healing.
Allow your skin the time it needs before returning to your normal training routine.
Follow the NKINK Aftercare Routine
Every tattoo is unique.
The best healing results come from consistency.
We recommend:
- following our personalised aftercare instructions
- washing your tattoo correctly
- applying only the recommended aftercare products
- avoiding unnecessary products or home remedies
- allowing the skin to heal naturally
Good aftercare is one of the biggest factors in achieving the best possible long-term result.
When Should You Contact Us?
Most tattoos heal without complications.
However, if you notice any unusual symptoms, please contact us immediately.
Examples include:
- redness that continues spreading after several days
- increasing pain instead of gradual improvement
- excessive swelling
- thick yellow or green discharge
- unpleasant odour
- fever
- signs that concern you
We would always rather answer a simple question than have you worry at home.
If you are unsure whether something is normal, simply contact NKINK Tattoo Studio.
We’re happy to help.
Healing Takes Patience
Every tattoo changes throughout the healing process.
It may become darker, lighter, cloudy, flaky, itchy, or dry before finally revealing its finished appearance.
These changes are part of normal skin regeneration.
Trust the process.
Take care of your skin, avoid unnecessary stress on the tattoo, protect it from the sun, and follow the aftercare instructions we provide.
Your patience during these first 4–6 weeks is one of the most important investments you can make in the long-term beauty of your tattoo.
