Summer in Bern is unmatched. The sun is shining, the Marzili is packed, and the temptation to float down the Aare river is at an all-time high. But if you’ve just gotten a fresh tattoo—or are planning to get one soon—summer requires a bit of strategy.
A new tattoo is essentially an open wound, and combining it with heat, sweat, and river water can be a recipe for disaster. To help you navigate the season without ruining your new ink, here is everything you need to know about tattoo aftercare during a Bernese summer.
The Golden Rule: Stay Out of the Aare (For Now)
It’s the number one question we get every July: “Can I jump in the Aare right after getting a tattoo?” The short answer is absolutely not.
- The Risk: Open bodies of water—yes, even our beautiful, crisp Aare—are home to natural bacteria. Submerging a fresh tattoo in the river increases your risk of severe infection.
- The Timeline: You need to avoid swimming in rivers, lakes (like Lake Thun or Lake Biel), and public pools for at least 2 to 4 weeks, or until your tattoo is completely peeled and healed.
- The Alternative: Stick to quick, lukewarm showers. Do not soak in the bathtub, and gently pat your tattoo dry with a clean paper towel.
Working Out and Sweating in the Heat
Bern is an active city. Whether you’re running up the Gurten, hitting the local gym, or cycling along the river, you need to be careful with heavy workouts post-tattoo.
- Heavy Sweating: Sweat can carry bacteria into your healing pores and irritate the skin. Try to avoid intense, sweat-inducing workouts for the first 3 to 5 days.
- Friction: Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing. Tight activewear rubbing against a fresh tattoo can cause premature scabbing and loss of pigment.
- Keep it Clean: If you do break a sweat, wash the tattoo immediately afterward with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.
Sun Protection: Your Tattoo’s Worst Enemy
UV rays break down tattoo pigment faster than anything else, leading to premature fading and blurred lines.
For Fresh Tattoos (0–3 Weeks)
Do not apply sunscreen to a fresh, healing tattoo. The chemicals can cause irritation and trap bacteria. Instead, keep it entirely covered with loose clothing when you are out in the sun.
For Healed Tattoos (3+ Weeks)
Once your tattoo is fully healed, sunscreen is your best friend. Every time you step outside, apply a high-quality, broad-spectrum SPF 50 to your ink to keep the colors vibrant for years to come.
