Getting a tattoo is an exciting milestone, but it’s completely normal to feel a mix of anticipation and nerves—whether it’s your very first piece or the latest addition to your collection.
Many clients spend weeks or even months planning their design, but when the day finally arrives, they are unsure what to expect. At NKINK Tattoo Studio Bern, we believe a premium tattoo isn’t just about the final ink on your skin; it’s about a transparent, relaxing, and exceptional journey from start to finish.
As a private studio, Noémi Kovács prioritizes your comfort, privacy, and safety above all else. This comprehensive guide covers exactly how to prepare beforehand and walks you through your tattoo day step by step so you can walk in feeling completely confident.
Why the NKINK Experience is Different
Walking into a loud, crowded street-shop can feel overwhelming. That’s why NKINK operates strictly by appointment only in a private studio setting in the heart of Bern.
- 100% Dedicated Attention: During your session, the studio is yours. There are no walk-in distractions, allowing Noémi to focus entirely on your design and comfort.
- Strict Swiss Hygiene Standards: Your health is non-negotiable. We strictly adhere to and exceed Swiss hygiene regulations, using top-tier sterilization protocols, single-use medical-grade equipment, and protective barriers.
- A Calming Atmosphere: From the lighting to a warm cup of coffee or tea, our space is a sanctuary where you can truly unwind. Tattooing is a team effort, and a relaxed environment creates the best results.
Part 1: How to Prepare Before Your Appointment
A successful tattoo day starts at home. How you prepare your body plays a massive role in how comfortable you remain and how beautifully your skin takes the ink.
1. The Day Before: Hydrate and Rest
- Drink Water: Well-hydrated skin accepts ink much better and heals faster. Start upping your water intake 24 to 48 hours before your appointment.
- Get Good Sleep: Being well-rested significantly increases your pain tolerance and keeps your nervous system calm.
- Avoid Alcohol: Do not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to your session. Alcohol thins your blood, which can cause excess bleeding and dilute the ink.
2. The Day Of: Fuel and Comfort
- Eat a Solid Meal: Eat a filling meal 1 to 2 hours before coming to the studio. This keeps your blood sugar stable and prevents lightheadedness.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy, unrestricted access to the area being tattooed (e.g., shorts for a thigh tattoo, a button-down shirt for a chest piece).
- Bring Snacks: For longer sessions, feel free to bring your favorite snacks and a sugary drink to keep your energy up.
3. Skin Care Do’s and Don’ts
- Do Not Sunbathe: We cannot tattoo sunburned or peeling skin. If you have a sunburn in the target area, we will need to reschedule.
- Leave the Shaving to Us: It’s helpful if the area is hair-free, but we prefer to shave the area right before the session with sterile, single-use razors to avoid any razor burn or micro-cuts.
Part 2: What Happens on Tattoo Day? Step-by-Step
When you arrive at NKINK, there are no surprises. Here is exactly what your day with Noémi looks like from start to finish:
Step 1: Welcome & Settle In
At your agreed appointment time, Noémi will welcome you into the private studio. Before any equipment is touched, we take a few moments to settle in, enjoy a coffee, tea, or water, and discuss the plan for the day. There is absolutely no need to rush.
Step 2: Health Check & Consent Forms
Before tattooing begins, you will complete a health questionnaire and consent form. This step is vital because certain temporary conditions—such as pregnancy, taking antibiotics, active skin infections, or being under 18—may mean we need to reschedule. Your safety always comes first.
Step 3: Final Design Consultation & Custom Placement
Now for the exciting creative part. Together, we review the design, size, and composition. Noémi may suggest small adjustments to complement your unique anatomy, improve readability, and ensure the longevity of the tattoo.
For custom projects, Noémi photographs the body area and uses ProCreate to visualize the design directly on your body. You will have all the time you need to give final approval on the design, size, and placement before we move forward.
Step 4: Workstation & Skin Preparation
While your custom stencil is being printed, Noémi sets up the workstation according to strict Swiss hygiene standards. Everything—from the tattoo machine and armrests to the lighting and work surfaces—is cleaned, disinfected, and wrapped in single-use protective barriers.
Next, your skin is cleaned, disinfected, shaved with a sterile razor, and disinfected a second time.
Step 5: Applying and Drying the Stencil
The stencil is transferred onto your skin. We will stand in front of a mirror together to evaluate the placement from every angle. If we need to reposition it several times to get it perfect, that is completely normal! Once you love it, we take a short 10-minute break to let the stencil dry completely—the perfect time to use the restroom or grab a quick snack.
Step 6: The Tattooing Process
We position you as comfortably as possible on the tattoo bed or chair. Noémi will perform a final hygiene check, opening sterile, brand-new needle cartridges and preparing the inks right in front of you. Once you hear the question, “Are you ready?” and you say yes, the journey begins.
Most projects follow a precise structural flow:
- Outlines: Creating the primary structure.
- Details: Adding fine lines and intricate elements.
- Black Areas & Shading: Filling solid sections and creating depth, contrast, and dimension.
- Highlights: Adding lighter tones or white highlights if required.
Throughout the session, we usually take a short break every 50–60 minutes to let you stretch, walk around, and relax mentally. Communication is always open—if you need a break sooner, just say the word.
Step 7: Photography & Protective Cover
Once the artwork is complete, we let the skin calm down so you can admire the finished result in the mirror. Noémi will then take professional photographs and videos to document the final piece and log the specific Swiss-compliant inks used. Finally, a medical-grade, protective second-skin tattoo film is applied to keep your fresh tattoo safe on your journey home.
Step 8: Aftercare & Follow-Up
A beautiful tattoo depends heavily on what happens next. Before you leave, Noémi will walk you through verbal and written aftercare instructions, providing product recommendations and healing advice. We will also schedule a complimentary healing check 5–6 weeks later to see how the ink settled.
